Should A Christian Have A Fairy Garden
Fairy gardens have actually been around a really long time. Over a hundred years in fact. Did you know fairy gardens first debuted in the US in 1893? They began as bonsai dish gardens and their popularity was likely due to the Japanese Pavilion at the Chicago World's Fair. Soon thereafter, theNew York Timesfeatured these miniature creations in an article and the rest, as they say, is history.
There's history in keeping a garden to please fairies. The idea was that you could plant certain flowers they like or build them a little house to calm a malicious fairy or receive good luck from a grateful one. The fairy myth begins when Irish ancestors living in the British Isles who were known as Tuatha de Danann were driven underground into the forest as a result of battles over power and land. This race has been described as the pre-Christian deities of early Ireland (kings, queens, and gods & goddesses of civilization and virtue) who were supernaturally gifted.
To avoid a battle with the Milesians who occupied the Iberian Peninsula (the areas around Spain) and was attempting to take over new lands, a mediator assigned the land above ground to the Milesians and allotted the land underground to the Tuatha de Danann. Though once described as giants, the myth suggests that fairies grew smaller in size as time passed and their existence became known only through legend. They use the cover of the forest to come out of the underground to play, dance and interact with mankind.
So in the spirit of the fairy legend, the fun and intrigue of keeping a fairy garden will provide a mini-forest as a place of refuge for the fairies to visit.
Fairy gardens have become increasingly popular and you can find accessories in many stores near you. We have picked up accessories at AC Moore and Hobby Lobby but there are tons of other places you can find them.
You can find accessories in just about any theme and size. So you can really get your creative juices flowing. We decided to put our fairy garden in a large planter that we had. You can pick any type of container that you would like. There is no right or wrong way to create your garden. The sky is the limit!
We hunted through the yard and found a lot of moss that we dug up to use in our garden. We also found some baby tree saplings that we incorporated into our fairy garden. We used rocks that we found to add some interest and we used blue glass flat marbles for our walkway. The great thing is that you can always change things up with new accessories to create new environments for your fairies.
I picked up some extra accessories while I was at Hobby Lobby today for the kids to add to our garden. Our garden has to have chickens of course! Along with a cute little bridge and some adorable frogs. I think they will be perfect for our Fairy Garden.
Here are some really cute Fairy Garden accessories at Heartsong. Click on the pictures for the links.
I have a feeling we are going to keep adding to our fairy garden and perhaps even creating a Fairy Village. They are super fun to do and the whole family can be involved and the possibilities are literally endless.
So enjoy! I would love to see the fairy gardens that you have created. Please feel free to share so we can inspire others to join the Fairy Garden obsession.
